Paper One
.
Set in the midst of the Great Depression and the bleak environment of the Dust Bowl, a family of farmers in Oklahoma fight against the violent dust storms to save their livestock despite the danger it poses to their lives.
.
* * *
.
Darker and darker the world became, as the dust filled the sky, blotting out the sun. The winds savaged the earth, tearing at everything that was left of the desolate landscape, and the Blakely family, a haggard and weary group of farmers, knew that this storm would be the end of them if they didn't act swiftly. They huddled together in the ramshackle farmhouse, hearts pounding like the drums of the wind, with fear and desperation etched on their faces.
.
"You all know the path," the patriarch spoke, his voice dry and grave as the dust that surrounded them. "There's no time to waste. We don't come back without all we can save."
.
Looking into one another's eyes, they found a kind of steel determination there. The fear had not yet shattered their family bond, instead forging new strength out of necessity. The Blakelys would not go quietly into that dust-choked night.
.
With a grim nod, they donned their makeshift masks, hastily crafted from their limited resources, and flung open the door. The wind lashed out with a whip-like force, the onslaught of dust nearly blinding. They huddled close, struggling against the overpowering gale, and stepped out into the storm, trying to find their footing in the shifting soil.
.
The looming barn sheltered the livestock they so desperately needed to preserve. The animals—cows, pigs, and chickens—were their last lifeline. Without them, the Blakelys would be ruined beyond redemption. They clenched their hands into fists, fear mingling with rage as they faced the vicious storm, ready to battle nature itself to save the last vestiges of the life they once knew.
.
Moving clumsily through the thick dust, the family members communicated through rough hand signals and shouted instructions, barely audible above the shrieking wind. Every step felt like an eternity, the malevolent storm clawing at them, threatening to pull them apart and scatter them like the tumbleweeds it had already claimed.
.
Just as hope seemed to be slipping away, the barn loomed before them like the hulking carcass of a long-forgotten beast. The barn door creaked as they forced it open, revealing the frightened and disoriented animals inside. With haste, the family began the arduous process of calming, moving, and securing the essential livestock.
.
As the Blakelys worked together with singular purpose, a sense of urgency that throbbed like a raw wound pervaded their every action. Yet the world seemed to darken still, the tempestuous storm growing ever stronger. Shadows danced on the edge of sight, and the very air carried a sense of dread. A searing scream tore from the throat of the youngest Blakely, as the storm ripped the roof from the barn, like a pebble torn away by a fearsome river.
.
"The animals! We need to get the animals out now!" the father roared above the cacophony, though he knew that the odds of their survival dwindled with each passing moment. Crossing the maelstrom seemed an impossible mountain to climb.
.
With a final surge of determination, both weary and righteous, the Blakely family pushed forward, guiding the half-panicked animals out of the ruins  of the barn. Cows, pigs, and chickens, once the symbol of their livelihood, had now become the focus of a desperate battle against the reaper of the land.
.
As they found themselves at the eye of the storm, the world around them swirled in a shifting chaos. No landmark was left to guide them, and each breath was filled with the bitter taste of the very land they had once nurtured. The bonds of family were tested against the grip of the storm, demanding that they weather the fury of nature's wrath or be swept away into oblivion.

Model Answers:
.
1. Why do you think the author chose the title 'Where the Winds Weep' for this text? Reflect on the symbolism behind the title.
.
The title 'Where the Winds Weep' evokes an image of the relentless and destructive wind of the Dust Bowl, while ascribing it an emotional quality -weeping. This may signify the torment and devastation of both the land and the people who lived there. It could symbolize nature mourning the loss of its fertility and vibrancy, while also personifying the wind by giving it human-like emotions. Additionally, the weeping wind alludes to the grief and suffering experienced by the farmers and their families amidst the harsh realities of the Great Depression and the bleak landscapes left in the wake of countless dust storms.
